Search is changing in front of us. A growing share of patients no longer type “dentist near me” into Google and scan ten blue links. They ask a question in plain English, “Who is a good dentist for Invisalign in Leeds?” and an AI gives them a short answer with two or three practice names in it.
If your practice is one of the names in that answer, you get the enquiry. If it isn’t, the patient never sees you at all. There is no page two in an AI answer.
Answer Engine Optimisation (AEO) and Generative Engine Optimisation (GEO) are how we make sure your practice is in the answer. It is the same goal as SEO being found by patients applied to the places patients increasingly look.
Let's check your practice's AI search performance.
You will see both terms used, sometimes interchangeably. Here is the simple difference.
Answer Engine Optimisation (AEO) is optimising your online presence so that answer engines like Google’s AI Overviews, featured snippets, and voice assistants can pull your practice and your content into their direct answers. When Google answers “how much do dental implants cost in the UK?” at the top of the page, AEO decides which information gets used.
Generative Engine Optimisation (GEO) optimises for generative AI tools such as ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, Copilot, etc. So that when a patient asks for a recommendation, your practice is accurately named and described. These tools build answers from what they find across the web: your website, your Google Business Profile, your reviews, and what trusted third-party sites say about you.
In practice, the two overlap heavily. Both reward the same things: clear direct answers on your website, a consistent and complete business presence across the web, strong reviews, structured data that machines can read, and mentions on sources AI already trusts. That is why we deliver them as one service.
This is not a future trend. It is happening now, in ways most practices cannot see in their analytics.
The pattern is across all of them: the AI compares the results, and the patient sees only the winners. Our job is to ensure your practice stands out to the AI.

our practice name, address, phone number, treatments, and opening hours need to say the same thing everywhere. Your website, Google Business Profile, Bing Places, directories, and social profiles. Inconsistency makes AI systems less confident about you, and unconfident systems leave you out of the answer.

AI tools lean heavily on review signals when recommending local businesses. Not just the star rating: the text of reviews teaches the AI what you are good at. Twenty recent reviews mentioning "nervous patients" and "painless implants" make you the answer to exactly those questions.

AI quotes sources that answer plainly in the first sentence or two. A page that opens with "Dental implants in the UK typically cost £2,000-£2,500 per tooth, depending on..." gets used. A page that opens with three paragraphs of marketing warm-up does not.

When an AI recommends "best dentists in Manchester", it is often synthesising from directories, review platforms, local press, and industry sites it considers reliable. Being present and well-reviewed on those third-party sources matters as much as anything on your own website.

ChatGPT's browsing and Microsoft Copilot draw on Bing. Many practices have never once looked at Bing. If you are invisible there, you are invisible to a large slice of AI search.
We would rather give you a straight answer than sell AI optimisation as a replacement for SEO. It is not. Here is how they actually relate.
| Traditional SEO | Local SEO | AEO / GEO | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Where you appear | Organic results | Google Map Pack | AI answers (AI Overviews, ChatGPT, Gemini, voice) |
| How patients see you | One listing among ten | One of three pins | One of the few names in the answer or absent |
| Built on | Content, technical SEO, links | GBP, reviews, citations | All of the above, plus schema, entity consistency, direct-answer content, trusted third-party mentions |
| Timescale | 3-6 months | 2-4 months | Layers on top early movement in weeks where foundations exist |
| If you stop | Rankings fade slowly | Visibility fades slowly | AI answers refresh from live sources, presence decays as data goes stale |
The important point: AEO and GEO are built on the same foundations as good SEO. A practice with strong dental SEO and a well-optimised Google Business Profile is already halfway there. What is usually missing is the machine-readable layer, the direct-answer content, and the third-party footprint and that is the work this service does.
If your SEO foundations are weak, we will tell you honestly that fixing those comes first. AI optimisation on top of a poor website is decoration.
We test how ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, and Google AI Overviews respond right now to the searches that matter to your practice by treatment and location and document where you appear, where competitors appear instead, and which sources the AI is drawing from. You see the gap before we start closing it.
We audit every place your practice appears online, correct inconsistent names, addresses, and treatment lists and make sure Bing Places, Apple Business Connect and the health directories AI trusts all describe your practice identically.
We implement and maintain Dentist, LocalBusiness, Service, FAQPage, and Review structured data across your website, so every AI system reading your site gets clean, unambiguous facts instead of having to guess.
We rework your key pages so each section answers its question in the first two sentences, the format AI systems quote. Where questions patients ask AI have no page answering them, we create the content, with clear pricing and treatment information where appropriate.
We build on your review generation process to grow not just the count but the coverage and reviews that mention the treatments and qualities you want AI to associate with your practice. This works hand in hand with our reputation management service.
Each month we re-run the query set from your audit and report where your practice now appears in AI answers, what changed and what we are doing next. AI search has no rank-tracker equivalent yet, so we built the monitoring process ourselves.
If AI search is not yet meaningful for your treatments and area, we will say so, and point your budget where it will work harder. That is the same honesty we apply to Google Ads recommendations.
Most practice owners have never asked ChatGPT to recommend a dentist in their own town. The result is often a surprise — sometimes a competitor with weaker organic rankings but a stronger AI footprint takes every mention.
We offer a free AI visibility check: we run the key patient queries for your area and treatments through the major AI tools, show you exactly what comes back, and explain why. You come away knowing precisely where you stand in the search channel that is growing fastest, whether or not you work with us afterwards.
They are related but not the same. SEO earns you positions in a list of results; AEO and GEO earn you a place inside the answer itself. They share foundations like content quality, reviews, local signals, but AI optimisation adds work which SEO never needed like structured data depth, entity consistency across the web, direct-answer formatting, and presence on the third-party sources AI synthesises from. Good SEO helps AI visibility; it does not guarantee it.
No an you should be cautious of anyone who says yes. Nobody controls what an AI system says, the same way nobody controls Google’s rankings. What we can do is systematically strengthen every signal these systems demonstrably rely on, measure your presence in AI answers month by month, and show you the movement. That is the honest version of this service.
We maintain a fixed set of real patient queries for your treatments and locations, run them through ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, and Google AI Overviews on a schedule, and record whether your practice is named, how it is described, and which sources are cited. Your monthly report shows presence and share of mentions over time.
It depends on your starting point. Practices with strong existing SEO and reviews can see AI mentions improve within weeks of schema, entity, and content fixes, because the systems refresh from live sources. Building third-party presence and review depth takes longer. Think in the 3-6 month range for durable visibility, similar to local SEO.
Not soon and you should not bet your practice on either extreme. Google is itself becoming an answer engine through AI Overviews, so “Google vs AI” is a false choice: the skills overlap. The practices that win are visible in the Map Pack, the organic results, and the AI answers. This service exists so you do not have to choose.
Much of the foundation will already be in place, which makes the AEO/GEO layer faster and cheaper to add. What the AI service adds on top is the schema depth, the direct-answer restructuring, the Bing and entity work, the third-party mention building, and the monthly AI answer monitoring, none of which is part of a standard SEO retainer.
